MTC: Gov. cancels prison operator’s contract following riot

A federal prison facility in Willacy County will no longer be operated by Management and Training Corp

Valley Central

RAYMONDVILLE, Texas — A federal prison facility in Willacy County will no longer be operated by Management and Training Corp.

The move comes after all 2,834 inmates – previously housed at the prison – rioted in Raymondville.

Federal prisoners were transferred to other locations around the country. Workers were also laid off.

“MTC recognizes the negative impact the closure of this facility will have on the local economy and will work tirelessly with Willacy County to secure another contract to reopen the facility,” the private operators of prisons said in a statement.

The prison facility held immigration detainees in the U.S illegally – some awaiting deportation, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons a division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
