PORTLAND, Maine — Police say a corrections officer likely saved the life of a motorcycle driver who was seriously injured in an early morning crash in Windham.

A corrections offices from the Windham Correctional Facility witnessed a car hit a motorcycle around 5:40 a.m. on Route 202 and stopped to render first aid. The motorcycle driver sustained serious leg injuries and was in surgery at Maine Medical Center Wednesday morning, said Windham Police Chief Kevin Schofield.

“That may have saved the life of the motorcycle driver,” he said.

Schofield said a sedan traveling east on Route 202 near Lotts Drive apparently crossed the center line and struck the motorcycle, which was traveling in the opposite direction. A preliminary investigation shows driver fatigue may have contributed to the crash, he said.

The motorcycle driver was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland. The driver of the car was not injured, according to police.

Police have not yet released the names of the drivers or the corrections officer.

Route 202 was closed for several hours following the crash. Schofield said a team of investigators is reconstructing the accident and will present the results of their investigation to the district attorney to determine if charges are warranted.
