CHICAGO — The U.S. Bureau of Prisons says former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has officially completed his prison sentence for spending $750,000 in campaign money on personal items.
Bureau spokesman Edmond Ross says the Democrat’s home confinement in Washington was lifted Friday and his ankle monitor removed. Ross says inmates whose release dates fall on a Sunday are always released two days earlier.
Jackson, the son of civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson, was sentenced to 2 ½ years in prison. With credit for good behavior and other factors, he served a year and a half behind bars, then six months in a halfway house and home confinement.
With Jackson’s freedom, his wife must report to prison soon to serve a one-year sentence on a tax conviction related to the campaign money.
