Heroin in mail shuts down NJ facility

HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP, NJ — Emergency personnel were summoned after a corrections officer discovered a white powder in a letter.

The Central Jersey reports that police, emergency services, and the fire department were summoned to the Mercer County Corrections Center around 12:28 p.m. to investigate “a possible exposure incident.”

The powder was later identified as heroin.

No injuries resulted from the incident and the facility was back up and running around 1:12 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation.
