ATLANTA, Ga. — A former Newton County detention officer who sexually assaulted two female inmates will spend 25 years of a life sentence behind bars.

A jury Monday convicted David Rex Bell of assaulting the woman in May 2013 while she was in the medical unit of the Newton County Detention Center, the District Attorney’s office told Channel 2 Action News. Prosecutors said a second victim also came forward.

Bell was convicted of one count of aggravated sodomy, one count of aggravated sexual battery, four counts of sexual assault against a person in custody, and two counts of violation of oath by a public officer.

He had been employed with the detention center since 2006.

After serving 25 years in prison, Bell will serve the remainder of his life sentence on probation. He also must register as a sex offender and pay $2,000 in fines.
