CO faces wait for AIDs results after inmate smeared him with blood

The guard was targeted by a violent prisoner in Mountjoy where union says staff are being “attacked with impunity” on a daily basis

IRELAND – A CO who was smeared with blood by an inmate at the Mountjoy prison in Ireland now faces a six week wait to see if he has contracted AIDs.

According to the Irish Mirror, the unnamed officer is one of many who POA chiefs say are being attacked by inmates “with impunity.”

The union is accusing governors of not punishing thugs who attack their members.

Two other Cos had boiling water thrown at them just last week.

Officials with the union disbelieve that officers should have to accept violence as “the nature of the job.”

Deputy general secretary Jim Mitchell said a policy signed a year ago to deal with violent inmates is being ignored by prison administration.

“We’ve negotiated a good way of dealing with violent and disruptive prisoners. But managers are turning around and saying, ‘No, we’ll do it this way.’”
