Chelsea Manning defends prison Twitter

Handwrote a letter to prove that it is her behind the @xychelsea Twitter account

FORT LEAVENWORTH — Chelsea Manning handwrote a letter to state that it really is her behind the Twitter account recently credited to her.

The NY Daily News reports that the letter regarding the Twitter account @xychelsea was sent to Trevor Fitzgibbons, one of the two people with access to the Twitter account.

Manning is currently “tweeting by proxy,” which she calls a temporary arrangement until she can access the account she allegedly made in 2013 before being convicted. Manning does not have computer privileges inside the jail.

“The tweets, except for retweets, are verbatim dictated over the phone to someone that I can call from here in Kansas,” she writes in the letter dated April 4.

The letter is written on Manning’s personal letterhead.

Manning is currently serving a 35-year sentence for violating the Espionage Act and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
