BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — An inmate who became combative with Jefferson County corrections officers died after a deputy was forced to use a TASER on him.

AL.com reports that Ricky Deangelo Hinkle was being separated from other inmates when he began to threaten others and created a disruption during a mealtime service.

During the process of moving, Hinkle threatened to harm himself and officers decided to place him under suicide watch.

Once officers arrived at the cell with Hinkle, Hinkle refused to enter and became combative with one of two deputies who were escorting him. A second deputy deployed a TASER, which caused Hinkle to fall to the floor and become unresponsive.

On-duty medical staff at the jail were unable to revive him and Hinkle was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway. Hinkle was serving time for a parole violation on a previous assault charge.
