SAFFORD, Ariz. – Officers may be seen training with trailing hounds in coming weeks as the Arizona Department of Corrections plans annual training exercises.
The Eastern Arizona Courier reports that locals may see officers and the dogs between September 28 and October 2.
The DOC has used both trailing hounds and horses for over 20 years with great success.
Trailing hounds are used to detect human scent and provide a direction of travel for teams to follow when searching for escapees and fugitives. They have also proved to be an invaluable resource in locating lost and missing persons.
