NESHANNOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. — An off-duty corrections officer stopped a would-be bank robber in his tracks last month during an attempted robbery, Action News 4 reported.
Officer Thomas Corcoran, who works at SCI-Mercer, was in line at a local bank when he noticed a masked figure with a backpack behind him.
“I looked out of the corner of my eye and saw a man with a mask and a backpack, and I said ‘Well, I better back up,’” Corcoran told Action News 4.
Corcoran used his personal firearm to get the suspect down on the ground.
“He dropped the bag,” Corcoran said. “He did exactly what I told him, dropped the bag, got on the floor and I said ‘Keep your hands where I can see them.’”
FBI officials said the man had robbed another bank just a few hours earlier, according to Action News 4.
The suspect fled before authorities arrived. Corcoran received a certificate of recognition from his supervisor at Mercer for his bravery and poise under pressure.
