FRESNO. Calif. — Thanks to the quick response of a corrections officer, a woman is alive after a brutal stabbing.

According to local news station ABC 30, a man is facing multiple charges for stabbing a woman in the neck multiple times at a grocery store before fleeing the scene.

“She was gashed kind of where her artery is on the backside and kind of where the breast bone is... It was bloody,” off-duty CO Fred Moss said.

Moss’ quick thinking to apply pressure to the woman’s wounds may have saved her life. The 64-year-old victim is being treated at a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses say the man and woman had a conversation before the incident. It’s unknown if they had a prior relationship or if the man talked to the woman that day, Fresno Police Lt. Joe Gomez reports.

Investigators are reviewing store video footage to determine what led up to the attack
