The pivotal work of an Enforcement Deputy Sheriff includes:

•Patrolling assigned areas in radio-equipped patrol cars and boats to provide numerous community services

•Preventing violations of the law

•Investigating criminal cases and traffic violations

•Collecting information regarding criminal activities

•Enforcing traffic and criminal statutes

•Seeking and apprehending law violators

•Assisting the District Attorney in preparing cases for prosecution and testifying in court

•Managing non-criminal matters such as conflict resolution, advising on civil matters, and making referrals to social service agencies

Incentives for qualified lateral candidates:

Incentives will be given once your law enforcement certification is recognized by Oregon DPSST Standards & Certification and you are confirmed by DPSST as a lateral transfer.

•Lateral entry candidates whose state certification is recognized by Oregon do not have to attend the Basic Academy and will start at a higher level of pay

•For lateral candidates the rate of pay is authorized by the Division Chief Deputy and determined by agency size, specialized training, specialty assignments, supervisory experience and other job related factors.

•The probationary period is reduced from eighteen (18) months to twelve (12) months

•All lateral candidates must successfully complete a training program (FTEP)

•Lateral applicants are eligible for a $5,000 hiring bonus; $2,500 to be paid at time of hire and $2,500 to be paid upon successful completion of the probation period.

•Lateral applicants are eligible for moving expenses reimbursed up to $2,500 with submission of expense receipts.

•Lateral applicants are eligible for 40 hours of sick leave and 40 hours of vacation to be added to the employee's leave banks at time of hire for usage.

•Lateral hires holding DPSST Certification, or a Bachelor’s Degree, may be immediately eligible for incentive pay upon hire.

Please Note: As a Deputy Sheriff with our agency you will be expected to work weekends, holidays, days, evening or nights as required. Overtime may be required and newly hired employees should expect to rotate through all shifts within the first 18 months of employment. Deputy Sheriffs are represented by the Multnomah County Deputy Sheriff’s Association (MCDSA).

ENTRY LEVEL Minimum Qualifications

•Must have or receive within 90 days from time of application a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

•Must be 21 years of age

•Must be a US citizen

•Must be able to obtain a valid driver’s license by time of appointment

•Background Investigation: Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation which includes but is not limited to a review of applicant’s criminal, civil, driving, military, educational and employment history.

LATERAL Minimum Qualifications

•Must have the equivalent of two (2) years of college education from an accredited college or university, OR 2 years active military service (as confirmed by a DD214), OR 4 years reserve military service

•Must have a high school diploma or GED

•Must have three (3) years prior sworn, certified police officer experience

•Must be or have been within the past 12 months, a certified civilian police officer who has passed probation

•Must be 21 years of age

•Must be a U.S. citizen

•Must be able to obtain a valid driver’s license by time of appointment

•Background Investigation: Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation which includes but is not limited to a review of applicant’s criminal, civil, driving, military, educational and employment history.

LATERAL Preferred Qualifications: You do not need to have the following preferred qualification to qualify. However, keep in mind we may consider the following when identifying the most qualified candidates. •State of Oregon DPSST Law Enforcement Certification
