OPENING DATE: 06/26/20 CLOSING DATE: 07/10/20 11:59 PM Central Time JOB TYPE: Limited Duration: Regular Sched (PT with benefits) LOCATION: Downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota DEPARTMENT: Sheriff's Office THE POSITION A position funded by the Department of Justice is available at the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Science Laboratory. As a Forensic Validation Specialist, you will assist with technology transfers and process validation that will have an impact in the criminal justice system. You will be responsible for executing validation experiments and procedure modifications that demonstrate a procedure, process, or activity carried out in the forensic DNA testing lab that meets the level of performance established by laboratory specifications and is compliant with the laboratory’s quality standards. Location and hours: The position is located at the Hennepin County Forensic Science Laboratory located at 530 Park Ave. S Minneapolis, MN 55415 in downtown Minneapolis. Work hours will be between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 20 to 30 hours a week. About this position type: This position is limited duration (temporary), part-time, benefit-earning position with an anticipated end date of 12/31/2021. In this position, you will: Establish project scope and experimental design. Perform bench experiments using molecular biology procedures. Analyze data and produce visual representation of the data. Write validation and procedure modification reports. Assist with the creating, reviewing, and implementing Special Operating Procedures in the lab. Assist in training staff scientists. Need to have: One of the following: A bachelor's degree or higher in forensic science, chemistry, toxicology, biology, microbiology, biochemistry or a field appropriate to the area of specialization. Five years or more of experience as an examiner/scientist in an accredited forensic laboratory. Nice to have: Two years or more of professional level experience in a molecular biology research laboratory. Graduate degree in molecular biology or other closely related area of study. Demonstration of successful projects in research and development, validation or technology transfer. Peer reviewed publications in which you are listed as an author. Experience: With criminal court procedures and practices with special reference to rules of evidence. Testifying in court as one of your main responsibilities. Using digital laboratory equipment, computers and computer software to conduct, evaluate, compare and identify, and document finger print evidence. Preserving evidence integrity and/or maintaining chain of custody for evidence. Knowledge of state, federal, and local criminal laws that apply to forensic evidence. Ability to testify as an expert witness in courts of law; present technical information and opinions to non-technical audiences in a clear, concise, and understandable manner.
