Job Description

The Department of Community Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCCR) is seeking a Corrections Supervisor to work at the Juvenile Detention Center (JDC), located in downtown Minneapolis. The JDC provides coverage 24 hours a day and is a short-term secure detention facility for juveniles pending disposition of their court cases.This position will supervise staff and resident activities to ensure security of the facility, control and safety of residents, and enforcement of Minnesota laws and Department of Corrections Licensing standards. The schedule will include various shifts including weekends, and holidays. This position will be subject to 12 hour shifts starting in 2018.The mission of the DOCCR is community safety, community restoration, and reducing the risk of re-offense.

The primary duties and responsibilities of this position include:

  • Support the overall mission of the JDC and DOCCR
  • Administer and enforce employer/employee labor agreement and Human Resources rules
  • Advise staff concerning institutional policies and procedures; handle complex problems and concerns of residents
  • Determine the disposition of minor resident disciplinary actions; verify resident release data, and prepare reports
  • Ensure adequate staffing coverage by managing schedules and providing coverage for assignments as necessary
  • Model social behavior to residents by asking and responding to questions appropriately, with the ability to manage stressful situations calmly and according to policy
  • Act as a liaison to the public in a professional manner; establish and maintain professional relationships with staff, public, residents, stakeholders, etc.
  • Write and review reports; ensure the reports are thorough and accurate
  • Respond to medical, safety, security, and other emergency calls; operate emergency equipment
  • Manage scenes that could include physical altercations, restraining of residents, and de-escalation of uncooperative residents
  • Assist with interviews, staff selection, and training; coach and evaluate employee performance; ensure policies and procedures are followed and initiate disciplinary actions when appropriate
  • Recognize and respect cultural differences and provide culturally appropriate services

Best Qualified Candidates must be at least 21 years of age and have:

  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor's degree or higher in corrections, law enforcement, or related criminal justice or behavioral/social science field
    • Two years (60 semester/90 quarter credits) of full-time college or vocational/technical coursework in one of the fields listed above and two years or more of full-time equivalent work experience as a correctional officer, juvenile correctional officer, or providing direct care to high risk youth in a residential facility
    • Four years or more of the experience as a correctional officer, juvenile correctional officer, or providing direct care to high risk youth in a residential facility
    • Note: Completion of an Evidence Based Practice Corrections Professional Certificate may be substituted for one year of relevant coursework or relevant experience
    • Note: One year of experience as a lead worker in a correctional facility may be substituted for two years of the required work experience
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit
  • Training and/or experience in the area of Evidence Based Practices (EBP) as it relates to providing services to high-risk youth
  • Ability to:
    • Lead and motivate others
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; write detailed reports
    • Work effectively with an increasingly diverse client population
