Job Description

Open Competitive recruitment for Mental Health Counselor 1. The position is located at Southern Desert State Prison (SDCC), in Indian Springs, Nevada.

Mental Health Counselors provide counseling, case management, direct clinical services, community and home based services, and behavioral and human services to mentally ill, developmentally disabled and/or emotionally disturbed clients in an outpatient, residential, community or similar setting. Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation.  Incumbents provide psychological services to inmates in a correctional setting. This includes assessments, crisis intervention, group and individual counseling, and psycho-educational classes. In addition, the Mental Health Counselor 1 is assigned a caseload of mentally ill, developmentally or learning disabled inmates. Opportunities are available for training and participation in the couples and family therapy program.

Job Requirements

  • Age: 21 years or beyond
  • Education: Master's degree from an accredited institution
  • Experience: Combination of clinical experience and educatuin
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
    Master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, social work or closely related academic field; OR an equivalent combination of education and clinical experience at or above a master's degree and experience as described above.
Special Requirements
    A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required.
    Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
