LIMERICK, Ireland — A Limerick Prison inmate who slashed a corrections officer in the neck with a broken CD is facing a potential three-year sentence.

The Limerick Leader reports that Damien Quinn admitted assaulting the officer while trying to escape from custody at the then Midwestern Regional Hospital almost two years ago.

Quinn is already serving a ten-year sentence for firearms offenses.

On the day in question, Quinn was found unresponsive in his cell and feigned illness in order to be transported to a nearby hospital. Once doctors confirmed there was nothing wrong with Quinn, he was taken to the rear entrance of the hospital while handcuffed to a corrections officer.

As the transport vehicle approached, Quinn produced a broken CD and put it up to the neck of the officer. Quinn then attempted to jump over a railing and take the officer with him.

The officer sustained scratches and abrasions to his neck and bruising to his abdomen, but he did not require hospital treatment.

Judge Carroll Moran said the appropriate sentence is three years imprisonment, but due to submissions made by defense attorney Mark Nicholas, he requested that a probation report be prepared in relation to the defendant.
