INDONESIA — The anti-drugs agency in Indonesia has proposed constructing an island prison guarded by crocodiles in order to hold death row drug convicts, according to officials.
The Mail & Guardian reports that the idea is the pet project of anti-drugs chief Budi Waseso.
“We will place as many crocodiles as we can there,” he was quoted as saying in a local newspaper. “I will search for the most ferocious type of crocodile.”
Waseso said the crocodiles are better than human guards as they cannot be bribed.
The plan is still in the early stages, with neither the location nor potential opening date of the facility yet decided upon.
Indonesia has some of the toughest anti-narcotic laws in the world, including death by firing squad for traffickers. President Joko Widodo said that drug dealers must face death as the country is fighting a “national emergency” due to rising narcotics use.
