ATLANTA — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released interim guidance for correctional facilities and detention centers as they continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The document, according to the CDC, was written to “ensure continuation of essential public services and protection of the health and safety of incarcerated and detained persons, staff and visitors.”
The interim guidance includes detailed information on the following topics:
- Cleaning/disinfecting and hygiene practices
- Operational and communications preparations
- Social distancing strategies
- Limiting transmission from visitors
- Infection control practices
- Potential alternatives during PPE shortages
- Screening protocols
- Medical isolation and quarantine practices
- Healthcare evaluation for suspected COVID-19 cases
- Care for confirmed or suspected cases
- Considerations for individuals at high risk of developing a severe case of COVID-19
Consistent application of these recommendations, according to the CDC, can help reduce the risk of transmission from COVID-19 in correctional facilities and detention centers.
