MOUNTYJOY, Ireland — An item intended for marijuana use was mistaken for a firearm by prison staff, causing a lockdown at Ireland’s largest facility this afternoon.
The Independent reports that the item, a ‘cannabis grinder,’ was found in a service area of the prison that is not frequented by inmates. Staff who found the contraband mistook it for a revolver.
The entire facility was locked down and a full search of the complex was conducted.
Further inspection of the item revealed its true purpose. The circumstances surrounding the find are still unclear, according to a spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service.
