CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — At least 24 people have been transported to area hospitals after exposure to an unknown substance at Ross Correctional Institute.

Dayton Daily News reports that it is unknown how many correctional officers and how many inmates were transported.

Ohio State Troopers told TV10 that the COs and inmates exhibited symptoms of a possible overdose.

Typical symptoms of an opioid overdose include irregular breathing, discolored lips or fingernails and slow heartbeat.

HAZMAT crews will inspect the affected cell block.

Ohio Highway Patrol Public Affairs Officer Lt. Robert Sellers told the Chillicothe Gazette officials can’t say yet what the substance was.
