HARTFORD — A Hartford Correctional Center inmate attempted to escape Saturday afternoon by hiding in the back of a truck, but was caught before he got outside, according to the Department of Correction.

Raul Santana, 25, of Hartford was charged with first-degree attempted escape and transferred to Northern Correctional Institution in Somers, officials said. He had been in custody of Hartford Correctional Center since Tuesday on a $15,000 bond on a charge of first-degree criminal trespass, the department said in a news release.

The center’s staff was alerted about 2:40 p.m. that someone had gained access to a roof from the outside recreation yard, according to the press release. “At no time did the offender breach the secured perimeter fence, which protects the community and surrounds the facility property,” the press release said.

The center was put on lockdown and the Department of Correction’s security division began , an investigation, the release said.
