SAN FRANCISCO — The deputy at the center of allegations that inmates were forced to fight each other has been handed his walking papers.

SF Gate reports that Deputy Scott Neu was terminated Tuesday.

He was on paid administrative leave since several inmates came forward in March, accusing him of forcing them to strike each other until they were bloody so he and other deputies could bet on the outcomes.

Inmates said that Neu threatened to beat them and spray them with Mace if they did not comply.

Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi asked the U.S. Department of Justice to conduct an independent investigation into the allegations and the FBI has launched a probe.

Neu’s attorney acknowledged that the deputy may have violated some prison policies but said that the allgations of a ‘gladiator school’ were unfounded.

Neu has had six lawsuits and claims filed against him over the course of his career with the department. Two of the suits accused Neu of sexually assaulting three inmates, focusing on them due to their race.
