NEW BOSTON, Texas — Defense experts at an inmate’s murder trial claim that the inmate, who is accused of beating a CO to death, has a “broken brain.”

TXK Today reports that 39-year-old Billy Joel Tracy is accused of beating CO Timothy Davison, 47, to death in 2015. Tracy slipped out of his handcuffs and punched Davison, then beat him in the head with a metal tray slot bar and threw him down a flight of stairs.

The defense in Tracy’s capital murder trial said the inmate has extensive brain abnormalities that makes is hard for him to control his emotions and behavior. A neuroscientist testified that Tracy’s criminal behavior could be driven by faulty circuitry in his “broken brain.”

A doctor said several brain scans show significant damage to areas of Tracy’s brain that regulate emotion. The doctor also agreed under cross examination that Tracy has refused to take medication and refused to take part in lab work to monitor medication levels.

Tracy is currently facing a possible death by lethal injection sentence. A verdict is expected this week.
