SPANISH FORK, Utah — Surveillance footage shows a handcuffed inmate running out of a courtroom before jumping off a second-story balcony.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the 35-year-old inmate was in a courtroom during a hearing for a misdemeanor charge Monday when he got up and ran toward the back of the room. The man can be seen on video flipping over the railing of the balcony and falling onto the courthouse’s lower level.

“It almost looks like he purposely dove right over the railing,” Spanish Fork police Lt. Matt Johnson said.

Police said the inmate sustained a head injury as well as a possible leg injury. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Johnson said the inmate, who was one of several transported to the courthouse for misdemeanor offenses, was not wearing leg shackles at the time of the incident. He added that all inmates transported to the courthouse will be required to wear leg restraints in the future.

Officials also plan to re-evaluate where officers and deputies are positioned around the courtroom.
