AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — A Maine sex offender has been charged with assault after he bit a CO and tried to slam a cell door on another.

WAGM TV reports that after Maurice Boyce, 38, pleaded guilty to several sex offenses, he learned that he was not going to post bail. He became irate and disruptive and engaged in a struggle with COs.

During the struggle, Boyce intentionally bit CO Eric Grant on the arm and attempted to slam a cell door on Corrections Sgt. Randy Schools. Boyce was eventually subdued and taken to a secure isolation area.

Both officers were taken to the hospital, but neither of them were seriously injured, WCSH reports

"Our Corrections Officers have a very challenging job and deserve great credit for the restraint they are expected to show on a daily basis," Sheriff Darrell Crandall said. "We will not tolerate assaults, of any kind, on our officers and staff."

Boyce faces up to five years in prison for the attack in addition to the 30 years he faces for the sex offenses.
