Prison time given to inmate for deadly assault

Man is headed back to prison for up to 20 years

Montgomery News

GRATERFORD, Pa. — A Bucks County man, after watching a video recording played in court of his brutal assault of a fellow inmate at the state prison in Skippack, learned he is headed back to prison for up to 20 years.

John Anthony Kasianczuk, 34, of Levittown, was sentenced Monday in Montgomery County Court to 10 to 20 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the Aug. 22, 2010 beating and stomping of inmate Roberto Avalle, of Philadelphia. Avalle was another inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Graterford in Skippack, who later died of injuries associated with the assault.

Judge Patricia E. Coonahan imposed the maximum sentence that is allowable under state law for the crime. Reading from a presentence report completed by probation officials, Coonahan said Kasianczuk “is a man in turmoil…tormented by demons,” who is in need of continued psychiatric treatment while in prison.
