More maggots found in Aramark prison kitchen

The spoiled food was thrown out before it was cooked or served, according to prison staff

LANSING — Lunch was interrupted at the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility when maggots were discovered in some of the food.

All potatoes were ordered thrown out and the kitchen scrubbed down after the maggots were found, according to the Detroit Free Press. Prisoners were cutting the potatoes when the maggots were spotted.

The spoiled food was thrown out before it was cooked or served, according to prison staff.

Aramark reports that it’s investigating the incident and checking their local Michigan potato supplier.

The potatoes were replaced with noodles for the midday meal.

This is the second case of maggots found where Aramark was hired to prepare food, though state officials said the maggots couldn’t be blamed on Aramark so much as prison food storage.

Michigan Department of Corrections Spokesman Chris Gautz said he didn’t want to assign blame for this incident, but he did say “it’s their food, their kitchen,” referring to Aramark.
