Calif. police cleared in death of mentally ill man

The Associated Press

WOODLAND, Calif. — The state attorney general's office has cleared Woodland police of inappropriate conduct in the death of a mentally disturbed man who was repeatedly shot with Taser stun guns.

Officers in Woodland, about 20 miles north of Sacramento, shot 44-year-old Ricardo Abrahams at least three times with Tasers and hit him with batons on May 28.

Police said the law student, who suffered mental disturbances, refused to follow their orders and became aggressive.

The Yolo County coroner concluded Abrahams died of asphyxia.

Deputy Attorney General David Lowe concluded there was no criminal conduct by Woodland police.

An attorney for Abrahams' family says he still plans to file a federal lawsuit against the police department.
