New Cop-Killer Bullet Stopped by First Choice Armor
For Immediate Release - June 3, 2003
Brockton, MA. - A new bullet out of Mexico capable of penetrating police-issued, bullet-resistant vests has hit the streets in the U.S. And while there's been considerable talk about the new ammo, Ed Dovner, founder of national body armor manufacturer First Choice Armor, is one of the first to take action.
"I received the notice about the ammo and immediately went to the head of my ballistic testing lab," says Dovner. "And I told him, 'We need to shoot this.'"
The newest so-called "cop-killer" is the Aguila IQ, produced in Mexico by munitions manufacturer TECNOS, and imported into the U.S. exclusively by TECNOS subsidiary, Centurion Ordnance, Inc. The manufacturer reports that the Aguila line, being sold to the general public and over the Internet, is loaded with the first "intelligent bullet." The bullet can configure itself according to the rigidity of the material it contacts. As a result, it can penetrate many government and law enforcement-standard, bullet-resistant vests.
Dovner read the Presidential Advisory but wanted to see for himself. He shot the Aguila round into several First Choice Armor vests. And many of them stopped the Aguila.
"We make it a practice to always test more than is required by government standards," explains Dovner. "There are bullets out there that we aren't required to protect against, but we do because we feel we owe it to the law enforcement folks who put their lives on the line every day. I'm certainly pleased that our rigid testing policies have already resulted in vests that will protect against this new threat."
Not all First Choice vests can stop the Aguila, but the majority can. Dovner says that, now that they are aware of the threat, as with all warnings he receives, all equipment produced by First Choice in the future will be tested for resistance to the new ammo.
