SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — State officials are exploring ways to detect if inmates are using cell phones inside Illinois' nearly 30 prisons. The Bloomington Pantagraph reports that state officials are worried about inmates who successfully smuggle cell phones into their cells. They're talking to companies about how much it would cost to install equipment to detect calls being made from inside prison walls. State Sen. Ira Silverstein has also introduced a bill that would strip inmates of up to 90 days of credit for their sentences if they are found with a cellphone. Copyright 2011 Sun-Times Media, LLC
