ORDWAY, Colo. — A public memorial was held Monday for Colorado Correctional Sgt. Mary Ricard. She was killed in an assault involving an inmate while breakfast was being prepared at the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility.
The memorial was held in Ordway, near the prison. Hundreds of law enforcement and corrections officers from across the country came to honor Sgt. Ricard; some from as far away as New York City.
Director of Prisons Tony Carochi recalled working with Sgt. Ricard while he was warden at another prison.
"Mary left a career as a pastry chef because it was not enough for her," he said. "She had a dream. She wanted to impact people's lives. It was clear to all who worked with her that she was dedicated and driven to make a difference."
