COOK COUNTY, Ill. — A Cook County sheriff's correctional officer died after a hit-and-run incident Wednesday night outside the county jail, officials said.

The woman was struck about 10:50 p.m. while she was crossing the street in the 2900 block of South California, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

She was hit by a full-sized gray van, possibly a Chevrolet with white and blue stripes, said Cook County sheriff's office spokesman Frank Bilecki. The officer became pinned under another vehicle and the van sped off.

She was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital where she later died, officials said.

A small group of employees at the jail gathered near the scene.

One woman emerged from a car and asked, "She didn't make it, did she?"
