SHIRLEY, Mass. — A correction officer was injured yesterday afternoon in an attack by an inmate at the maximum-security Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, an official said, and two other correction officers were injured when they came to the first officer's aid.

Diane Wiffin, spokeswoman for the state Department of Correction, said the officer was making security rounds about 12:35 p.m. when an inmate attacked him with a razor blade, pen and toothbrush that had been fashioned into weapons.

"These are items they are allowed to have," she said.

The items, however, had been altered for the assault.

The correction officer defended himself, Ms. Wiffin continued, and two other officers came to his aid.

The inmate was restrained within five minutes, she said.

The officer was taken to an outside hospital, where he was being treated for his injuries last night.

Ms. Wiffin said the injuries were not life-threatening.

The other two officers were also treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Ms. Wiffin said.

A disciplinary report will be made against the inmate, and criminal charges will also be sought through the district attorney's office, Ms. Wiffin said.
