Q: I am a new officer. There are gang members everywhere in our jail. How should I best deal with them to maintain my authority while not setting myself up as a target?

A: You became a target of the gangs the minute you pinned that badge on your crisp new shirt. You are an 8-point buck sleeping in a clearing. Your job now is to get out of the clearing and into the woods ... Full Story

Growing up with a
parent in prison

"I recently came across this same problem in our agency. [A newly minted sergeant] was not only new in his CO training, but is now expected to take over as supervisor of several line officers who had more experience than he did ... also, he is in his twenties. This not only puts tremendous pressure on the line officers to accept him, but also on the new sergeant to perform his duties and to have his line officers put faith in his abilities. Both are left in a difficult position."
