Kan. prison farm offers chance to train inmates

Some minimum-security inmates volunteer for the farm, where they grow tomatoes, potatoes, sweet corn and other crops

By The Associated Press via Fox4KC

LEAVENWORTH, Kan.  — Inmates at the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth are helping themselves and needy families in the Kansas City metro area by growing hundreds of thousands of pounds of produce at a prison farm.

Some minimum-security inmates volunteer for the farm, where they grow tomatoes, potatoes, sweet corn and other crops. The prisoners are serving time for non-violent crimes, such as wire fraud and embezzlement.

The Kansas City Star reports that the farm donated 80,000 pounds of produce last year. It's expected to donate about 200,000 pounds this year.
