LEE COUNTY, SC — A 24-year-old S.C. Department of Corrections' Lee Correctional Institution inmate has been charged with kidnapping and assault of a correctional officer following a June 5, 2012, riot.

According to an arrest warrant, Brian Rashard Garris attacked S.C. Department of Corrections Officer Gregory Grate with a shank and struck him several times in the head before taking his keys, vest and pepper spray.

The warrant states that Garris used the officer's keys to unlock cell doors and free inmates, which resulted in a riot. Inmates were able to move Officer Grate to numerous cells before being confined to the Special Management Unit by other officers.

Arrest warrants show Garris faces multiple charges including Assault and Battery in the first degree, Possession of a weapon during a violent crime, Kidnapping, Participating in a Riot by prisoners and Taking of hostages by an inmate.

According to the S.C. Department of Corrections website, Garris is currently serving a 40 year sentence for armed robbery, which he began in May 2006. He is ineligible for parole.
