Officials probing death of inmate found in transport van

The inmate was being transported from Florida to Ohio by a private transport agency

The Associated Press

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is probing the death of an inmate in a transport van outside the Monroe County jail.

WBIR-TV reports the inmate was being transported from Florida to Ohio by a private transport agency. The body was discovered on Wednesday evening after the van arrived in Monroe County to pick up an inmate there. The man was never in the custody of Monroe County law enforcement.

TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm said the man is believed to have died in Georgia. TBI has not yet identified the inmate or the circumstances that contributed to his death.

Helm said the Monroe County District Attorney requested the agency's involvement in the case.
